The Obama administration has invested a great deal in community colleges, to help reach America's weakest populations. Well, following the law of unintended consequences, it seems that too many weakest students are attending, so community colleges are going to start raising admissions standards. Sounds like a school has tried something similar. The computer learns the student, how she or he learns, what motivates them, and what kind of practices will motivate them. Then, the computer gives them personalized assignments. But then I read some of the comments, with people explaining that this is not good news because it reflects overparenting and not giving children adequate independent time. Perhaps there is just a certain fixed measure of parental anxiety free-floating in the air. What ever we do, we will berate ourselves for not doing the opposite.

Economics of Edutainment

The audio from our very succesful erev iyyun from last night is now up online. Americans believe that a college education is more and more necessary for success, but I also believe that it is economically increasingly out of reach. At least that is what comes out of this Public Agenda survey. The study also finds that Americans think that colleges are being run too much as businesses, with an eye toward profitability rather than maximizing education for as many students as possible.
