Bowing to the gods of the test score

Who cares about broadening horizons, experiencing new things, airing out, multi-sensory learning, and just plain fun!? Now that the NY Times has set me straight, I now understand the real reason to take urban kids on a field trip to the farm: it boosts their test scores.

It seems to me that education is working! By asking questions that require a different kind of knowledge, the school responds by providing a different kind of knowledge. Even if the kids are motivated by a desire to earn an additional point, the bottom line is that they ARE experiencing the field trip, and learning from the experience, no matter what it is called.
